The testimony of Johan Toet

Johan Toet grows up in the Schilderswijk in The Hague, where crime is the order of the day. Johan quickly is the famed guy. He has the talent to make money off the backs of others. He does this for years on end and from time to time he gets caught.

But “sitting for a few years with a million in the bank is not so bad” according to the ‘old’ Johan. One night however, he literally sees God’s light in his prison cell. The moment overwhelms him.

Johan: ‘I thought: what is going on? God comes to me, the greatest cockroach on a pee stain?! I really thought that. I couldn’t understand that something that was so beautiful and so good came to me. And that broke me. I cried out really loudly: God forgive me!’
